More controversy surrounding VAR was sparked this week after an incredible run of events in the Bundesliga. Mainz were awarded a bizarre penalty even though the half-time whistle had been blown, after referee Guido Winkmann consulted VAR over a suspected handball.
This lead to the Mainz and Freiburg players being asked to leave the changing rooms and take to the pitch so the penalty could be taken. The second half was delayed as furious Freiburg fans covered the pitch with toilet paper in protest.
This is the latest incident in an ever-growing list of embarrassing moments for the technology and it comes just days after the Premier League clubs voted against the introduction of the technology to the league. With all 20 clubs agreeing to a further year of trials before considering the introduction of VAR. The decision was expected after the technology had received widespread criticism.
