The Spanish Football Federation has approved plans for the Super Cup to be played in Saudi Arabia.

Despite protests from La Liga, the federation approved plans this week to adjust both the Super Cup and Copa Del Rey tournaments.

The Super Cup will now be contested by four teams, consisting of the top two teams in La Liga and both Copa del Rey finalists from the previous season. The competition will take place in January, rather than at the start of the season in August.

The governing body’s approved changes to the Copa del Ray’s format look set to do away with the traditional two-leg format from the round of 32 onwards. Instead, it will be played as a single match competition per round until the semi-finals.
