Sky have lost the live TV rights to broadcast La Liga matches in the UK and Ireland. After Eleven Sports secured an exclusive three-year deal, ending a 20-year association between Sky and the Spanish top flight.
Eleven Sports were founded in 2015 by Leeds United owner, Andrea Radrizzani. They are already established on a global scale, including sports broadcasting in the USA, Italy and Singapore, with rights including Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1.
Eleven Sports must now decide how they will show La Liga in the UK, it’s ‘over the top’ rights mean that it could be broadcast via a website or app for subscribers – as it already does in Italy. Alternatively an Eleven Sports channel could be set up in the UK or the broadcaster could exercise the right to sub-license particular La Liga games to other broadcasters.
