England’s all-time goal scorer, Wayne Rooney, has agreed a deal in principle to join MLS side DC United for a reported fee of between £12m and £12.5m. Rooney was rumoured to be moving State side at the beginning of the 2017/18 season, before eventually returning to his boyhood club, Everton.

It is understood that Rooney has been offered a contract until the end of the 2020 MLS season and should the move go ahead it could mean that Manchester United, Everton and DC United must pitch in together to pay his wages.

DC United are reportedly offering Rooney a £3m per-year contract, but that is nowhere near the outstanding £15m on his remaining contract at Goodison. Manchester United are already subsidising his sky-high salary at Everton by paying £10m a year towards his wages. Therefore, United and Everton must come to an agreement to cough up the difference before Rooney can agree terms on the next move of his career.
