Mailman have released their eighth annual Red Card report, which highlights the influence that European football has across a range of digital platforms in China. The report shows that the Premier League is now the most influential league online in China, ending the Bundesliga’s reign.
China has been a focal point for the Premier League in recent years and in 2018 the English top-flight became the first European league to launch an official Chinese app. The Premier League also dominates on WeChat, with higher reads than all other European leagues combined.
Interim Premier League chief executive, Richard Masters, said that the “digital strategy for China supports our live events and the work of our broadcast partners to create even more ways to engage with fans.”
In terms of individual clubs, Real Madrid claim top spot as the most popular team in China. This is despite losing Cristiano Ronaldo, who receives more engagements on Chinese social media than any other player.
