A third European club competition will be introduced from 2021, UEFA has announced. The new competition is as a result of “widespread demand” for participation at European level according to UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

The new competition, with a working title of ‘UEL2’, will sit under the current Champions and Europa League tournaments. Eight groups of four will be whittled down to a round of 16, following a play-off between the second-placed teams and those who finish third in the Europa League. Quarter-finals and semi-finals will then follow, before a 141st game, the final.

UEFA have said that the criteria for earning a place in the new competition will be down to individual associations discretion, whether it be through league position or cup. The winner of the UEL2 will earn a place in the following seasons Europa League.
