Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder, Luka Modric, ended the reign of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as he was crowned the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner. Modric who won his third successive Champions League in May before captaining Croatia to the World Cup final, becomes the first player other than CR7 or Messi to win the award since 2007.
History was also made on the night as Ada Hegerberg won the first ever Women’s Ballon d’Or for her achievements with Lyon. Whilst Kylien Mbappe took home the inaugural Kopa Trophy – awarded to the best under-21 player, selected by former Ballon d’Or winners.
Perhaps the biggest shock of the night was the absence of Lionel Messi from the Top 3. Despite scoring 60 goals, providing 24 assists and winning the La Liga title, the Argentinian only placed 5th.
In September Luka Modric also received the FIFA Best award, read more about the honour here.
