This week Forbes released the Top 100 Highest Paid Athletes, with Floyd Mayweather taking the number one spot for the fourth time in seven years. The 41-year-old boxer was largely helped by his $275m payday in August, when he took on UFC star Conor McGregor, bringing his boxing record to an incredible 50-0.
Mayweather takes the crown from Cristiano Ronaldo, who held top spot for the previous two years. Ronaldo, who was paid $108m in the last year, was also leapfrogged by footballing rival Lionel Messi who earned $111m – largely due to his $81m earned through wages and prize money.
The list featured players from 11 different sports, represented by 22 different countries. With NBA stars making up 40 spots in the top 100. The UK has five representatives, led by F1 driver Lewis Hamilton at number 12 with $51m.
However, there are no women on the list, after the previous sole entrant, Serena Williams, dropped out of the chart.
