FIFA president Gianni Infantino has proposed a mini-World Cup tournament, every two years in addition to the current tournament. The tournament, The Final 8, would be the climax to the proposed Nations League competition – an international tournament that aims to replace international friendlies. More here.
Infantino believes that the reformed international structure could be worth £18.3bn in a 12-year cycle, after he said that he had a group of “solid and serious” investors who were willing to spend. Infantino said in a letter that the group of investors had proposed spending £18.3bn to secure the rights to the tournament – which would take place every October and/or November, starting in 2021.
The new competition would run parallel to existing international tournaments such as the European Championship, Copa America, and African Nations Cup, plus the World Cup qualifying stages. However, the Confederations Cup would be abolished.
