FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, confirmed earlier this week that VAR will be used at this summer’s World Cup in Russia. The decision comes after the International Football Association Board (IFAB) reached a unanimous decision to approve the technology earlier this month, following a successful two-year trial period.

Infantino said that the decision was made based on the trials that were carried out in over a thousand matches, which provided FIFA with concrete facts that VAR definitely helps referees.

However, others in the footballing world are less confident of the technology. Spurs boss, Mauricio Pochettino, says he feats the technology could kill the emotion in the game. Whilst UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has previously said that VAR will not be used in the Champions League as “nobody knows exactly how VAR will work. There is already a lot of confusion.”
