Last week Minnesota United midfielder, Collin Martin, became the latest in a very short list of professional footballers who have openly come out as gay. Martin is currently the only openly gay footballer to still be playing football in any major league in the world, his heart felt Twitter post carries the hashtag #SoccerForAll.
Martin’s tweet generated huge engagement on social media, receiving over 100,000 likes and 20,000 retweets, causing #SoccerForAll to trend.
Martin made his first appearance for Minnesota since coming out on July 4th, during their 4-3 win over Toronto. He received a standing ovation from both home and away fans, with several fans holding LGBT rainbow scarves.
Thomas Hitzlsperger remains the only Premier League player to ever come out as gay, however his announcement was made after he retired from the game. Charities such as Stonewall are trying to remove the stigma attached to homosexuality in football. The #RainbowLaces campaign has gone from strength to strength since first launching in 2013.
