UEFA trialled a secure ticketing programme supported by blockchain technology for last week’s Super Cup between Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid, in Tallinn.
Fans who purchased tickets were sent an activation code via SMS along with a download link for the app (iOS and Android devices). When fans arrived they simply had to present their smartphone and enable Bluetooth at the turnstiles to gain entry to the stadium.
The desire to use this blockchain technology and move to paperless systems is driven by teams and venues wanting capture data from the consumer as well as the environmental benefit of eliminating paper tickets.
This technology also minimizes the risk of fans being sold fraudulent tickets and reduces ticket touts from selling on tickets for hyperinflated prices.
